The E1 series Shinkansen, nicknamed Max, was introduced in 1994 and is Japan's first all-double-decker Shinkansen train.
In November 2003, the train's paint job was changed significantly from the previous one, and it is now painted in the same white and dark blue as the E2 series, with a pink stripe reminiscent of a crested ibis at the dividing line.
After the paint job was changed, the train continued to be used on the Joetsu Shinkansen for a long time, but was taken out of service in October 2012.
