The 401 series is an AC/DC commuter train developed for the Joban Line in 1960, and the front of the leading car was given a high driver's cab like the Kuha 153-500 series. The exterior was originally painted rose pink, but in 1983 it was gradually changed to cream with a blue stripe in time for the Tsukuba Expo held in 1985.
