The Kiha 47 8000 and 9000 series are vehicles that have had their engines upgraded from the Kiha 47 0 and 1000 series inherited by JR Kyushu.
Depending on the time of the upgrade work, there are various differences in appearance, such as the presence or absence of louvers on the side of the car body, the presence or absence of a toilet window, and the presence or absence of a water tank on the roof.
Some cars have been modified to improve their air conditioning performance, and ducts and air conditioning equipment have been added to the roof.
The Kiha 47 series was widely used within Kyushu, but as it has been replaced by successor cars, cars with the original engines have been scrapped, and it is currently mainly used in the Kagoshima, Miyazaki, Saga, and Nagasaki areas.
