Of the four EF81-300 locomotives that appeared for the Kanmon Tunnel, the first batch of locomotives, No. 301 and No. 302, were transferred to Uchigo Locomotive Depot in 1978 to replace the EF80s used on the Joban Line. Both locomotives were distinctive in that they were painted in the same red No. 13 color as the other EF81s due to visibility issues when used on the Joban Line. After being transferred to Tabata Locomotive Depot in 1982, they were also used to pull passenger trains such as the sleeper express 'Yuzuru' and express 'Towada' that run on the Joban Line. In 1985-86, they were transferred to Moji Locomotive Depot and were used again on the Kanmon section, but continued to be used in the red No. 13 color until they were scrapped.
